Hampton Bay Days would like to thank all of the volunteers who participated in Clean The Bay Day's Downtown Hampton shoreline clean up on June 6th. Your efforts are very much appreciated!

Bay Days Foundation History

In 1985, the festival became a not-for-profit, non-stock 501(c)(4) corporation. In 1997 a new 501(c)(3) Bay Days Foundation was created to further expand Bay Days' environmental goals. This supports the "Kid's Play" Chesapeake Bay Education Area in the festival and the year-round initiatives of the Foundation.

Continued support of this area is critical to promoting the conservation of the Chesapeake Bay and its natural resources and to instilling the importance of preserving the environment in tomorrow's generation. Grants made to the Hampton Bay Days Foundation, a 501 (c) (3), used to fund activity in this area of the festival are fully deductible.

Wyland Mobile Learning CenterA movie theater? A running river? Rain? It’s all inside the new Wyland Clean Water Mobile Learning Center. Ready to roll in any school, community center, or museum, this partially bio-diesel powered, 1,000-square foot exhibit on wheels will change the way your community looks at water forever.

Become a Clean Water Challenge Agent

Upon entering the mobile learning center students are recruited as CWC agents. A film with special effects begins their training and they are tasked to solve mysterious disturbances in the health of our nation’s water habitats, with exhibits focusing on lake regions, river management estuaries, and ocean runoff.

“Wyland teaches kids how the things people do miles away from an ocean or bay eventually can affect the quality of water there.” — Washington Post, Nov. 8, 2007

Hampton Bay Days conducts a reading and writing contest called, “Estuary Essays.” An estuary is where rivers meet the sea in shallow, protected bays. Children can check-out books from Hampton Public Libraries or purchase them from Barnes and Noble. An “Estuary Essays” book list has been developed by the Hampton Public Library and includes Awesome Chesapeake: A Kid’s Guide to the Bay by David Owen Bell and the charming “Chadwick the Crab” series by Priscilla Cummings and for older readers, Waterman’s Boy by Susan Sharpe and Beautiful Swimmers by William Warner. To enter the “Estuary Essays” contest; children have the option of reading one book or several from the list and then writing an essay about what they learned about the Chesapeake Bay. Essays must cite each book read and the age of the writer. All children under eighteen in the Hampton Roads Area are eligible to enter the contest. All children who paticipate are automatically registered to become members of the Clean Water Kids Club. Winners will receive prizes at a special ceremony during Hampton Bay Days. The “Estuary Essays” book lists are available at the Hampton Public Library and at Barnes and Noble. Winners will be notified by September 1. View our Reading List.essay contest
